HCN has a clear goal.
To assist in providing direct services for the street children in Mexico. We are trying to protect the street children, often from those uniformed authorities who are supposed to protect them. Be informed, and then please act. Only if we all work together will we be able to really protect the street children. And if we do not do anything to help, who will? If we want peace, we must work for justice....
Mexico population is 60 million (90 million projected by 2000 A.D.). The people are Mexican, and Indian, their language Spanish, the predominant and religion is Roman Catholicism.
According to legend, the Aztec gods led the Indians to a dry lakebed where they found an eagle with a serpent in its mouth. Out of this lakebed, 7300 feet above sea level, has risen the world's largest city. Mexico City, which is growing by 80,000 per month or nearly one million people each year. This staggering growth is due to 48,000 new babies each month (60%) and 40% migrating into the city. The average age is 14.2 years with 62% of the population being nineteen years old or younger. The current debt is 2.3 billion dollars. Since 1982 the peso has been devaluated 1500%. Unemployment and underemployment run about 60%.
